You are legally obliged to clear your windows of snow and ice before you start your journey. You are also a bloody idiot if you think its okay to only have a letterbox view of the world, or drive along with you head out the window, rather than clear them properly.

In most parts of the UK, it’s normal practice to only treat major roads. A snow shovel may make the difference between making it home in your car or abandoning it in favour of walking the rest of the way.

It’s surprising how quickly a car turns into a fridge when you switch off the engine. If you’re stuck on a motorway that’s likely to be closed for several hours, snuggling under a blanket or sleeping bag is a good option.

A torch is always a welcome accessory in the dark,  but this is brilliant. It's very comfortable, leaving both hands free. The beam is zoom-able and the vertical direction is adjustable.

Non-Perishable Food and Water: I suggest at least one 1 litre flask of hot water. Don’t forget coffee, tea, sachets of soup. I like to have a food flask with me too, and some instant noodles: put the noodles in the food flask, add hot water, put the lid on, and 10 minutes later, you can kid yourself that you’re having a wholesome hot meal!
